Veteran CB James among notable cuts by Bills
By JOHN WAWROW, AP Sports Writer
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP)—Cornerback Will James’ attempt to get a fresh start with the Buffalo Bills ended Saturday when the seven-year NFL veteran was among 22 players cut.
James, who signed a two-year contract in March, had a solid training camp as Buffalo’s nickel cornerback, but proved to be the odd man out.
Instead, Buffalo kept Ashton Youboty as part of a deep defensive backfield that will also include two rookies: first-round draft pick Leodis McKelvin and fourth-rounder Reggie Corner, playing behind starters Terrence McGee and Jabari Greer.
Youboty, the Bills’ 2006 third-round draft pick, opened training camp on the bubble after two disappointing years, but had a solid preseason in which he finished with a team-leading two interceptions and a sack.
James, formerly known as Will Peterson, spent the past two seasons with Philadelphia and was attempting a comeback after he had been bothered by chronic back problems.
The cuts came as the Bills reduced their roster to an NFL-maximum 53 players in preparation for their season opener against Seattle next weekend.
Among the other notable players released by the Bills were running back Dwayne Wright, Buffalo’s 2007 fourth-round draft pick who appeared in 14 games last season, and linebacker Donnie Spragan, a seven-year NFL veteran who signed with Buffalo earlier this month after rookie Alvin Bowen sustained a season-ending knee injury.
Wright’s release came after he had three fumbles in four preseason games. He was beaten out for the No. 3 job by Xavier Omon, the rookie sixth-round pick, who had team-leading 109 yards rushing and a touchdown in four preseason games.
The Bills kept only three tight ends after cutting veterans Courtney Anderson and Tim Massaquoi, who both signed as free agents this offseason. That leaves the team little depth behind starter Robert Royal as backups. Derek Fine and Derek Schouman are both nursing injuries.
Fine, a rookie fourth-round pick, is out indefinitely after he had surgery to repair an injured thumb last week. Schouman is expected to resume practicing soon after missing two weeks with a knee injury.
Buffalo also kept four offensive tackles, including rookie seventh-round pick Demetrius Bell and backup Matt Murphy, who has missed three weeks with a partially separated left rotator cuff. By making the team, Murphy is expected to hold off having surgery until after this season.
The Bills have no experience at tackle behind starters Langston Walker and Kirk Chambers, because Pro Bowl left tackle Jason Peters remains on the team’s reserve-did not report list because of the player’s ongoing holdout over a contract dispute. Peters wants the final three years of his contract restructured and has been fined more than $15,000 for each day he’s missed since training camp opened July 25.
That penalty will rise significantly this week, when Peters would begin losing more than $191,000—or one-seventeenth of his $3.25 million base salary — for each week he misses during the regular season.
Bills chief operating officer Russ Brandon said Thursday he’d had no contact with Peters this summer. The Bills aren’t budging from their position of demanding Peters play this year under his existing deal before they consider opening talks in the offseason.
Peters and his agent, Eugene Parker, have not commented on the holdout, leaving it unclear as to when the player might report to the team.
Also released by the Bills were linebackers Jon Banks, Marcus Buggs and Blake Costanzo; offensive linemen Dustin Dickinson, Patrick Estes, Robert Felton, Christian Gaddis and Nevin McCaskill; defensive linemen Jason Jefferson, Derrick Jones, Corey Mace and Teraz McCray; running backs Jonathan Evans and Bruce Hall; cornerback Dustin Fox and receiver Felton Huggins.

For the first time, scientists have proven that "beer goggles" are real - other people really do look more attractive to us if we have been drinking.
Surprisingly, the beer goggles effect was not limited to just the opposite sex among the ostensibly straight volunteers recruited for the study - they also rated people from their own sex as more attractive.
Scientists in England gave 84 heterosexual college students chilled lime-flavored drinks that were either non-alcoholic or given a dose of vodka equivalent in alcohol to a large glass of wine or a pint-and-a-half of beer.
After 15 minutes, the volunteers were shown photos of 40 other college students from both sexes. Both men and women who drank booze found these faces more attractive, "a roughly 10 percent increase in ratings of attractiveness," said researcher Marcus Munafo, an experimental psychologist at the University of Bristol in England.
The researchers also asked volunteers to rate their mood, "and there were no differences on those measures in the alcohol group compared to the no-alcohol group," Munafo added. "This suggests that the effect we observed wasn't due to a general change in mood."
It did not escape Munafo that the results are rather obvious.
"Everyone knows about beer goggles," Munafo said. "But some of our results suggest that there's more going on than we might have thought."
The discovery that the effect is not specific to the opposite sex was surprising. One possibility is that alcohol generally makes us see things as more attractive, but when this occurs in social situations, such as at a bar, "this might become targeted at opposite-sex faces," Munafo said. By repeating the experiment with video clips shot at bars, the scientists hope to recreate those social cues and see what happens.
"The main question is whether these effects are specific to faces, or whether we would rate anything as more attractive after a drink," Munafo said.
Future research could expose people who have been drinking to landscapes or the faces of puppies and other animals, "to see if alcohol has a more general effect on perceiving beauty in the environment."
"It's also surprising to see this effect is happening at lower doses than you might think," Munafo said. "We're trying to build up a more complete picture of what happens when people go out for a drink, and we're interested in certain behaviors that are more common after drinking, such as unsafe sex, or violence. If this effect is happening at lower doses than expected, it might be helpful for people who are predisposed to such behaviors to anticipate those situations and prevent them."
The scientists would also want to vary the levels of alcohol that volunteers receive, "but there are practical and ethical constraints around how much alcohol we can give people in the lab!" Munafo told LiveScience.
Munafo and his colleagues detailed their findings online August 6 in the journal Alcohol and Alcoholism.

BUFFALO, NEW YORK (TICKER) —The Buffalo Sabres and left wing Daniel Paille agreed to terms Wednesday on a multi-year contract.
Terms were not disclosed, but TSN of Canada is reporting Paille will receive $2.25 million over two years.
Drafted 20th overall in 2002, Paille enjoyed a solid first full NHL season in 2007-08, scoring 19 goals and 35 points in 77 games with the Sabres.
“Danny is a talented young player that can make a difference at both ends of the ice,” Sabres general manager Darcy Regier said. “Danny has been a key component to our penalty-killing unit, and we look forward to helping him continue to develop with our club for years to come.”
Paille, 24, has 23 goals and 26 assists in 120 career games - all with the Sabres. The Ontario native was selected with the 20th overall pick by Buffalo in 2002.
In other moves Wednesday, left wing Clarke MacArthur and right wing Mark Mancari accepted their qualifying offers with the Sabres.
A third-round pick in 2003, the 23-year-old MacArthur recorded eight goals and seven assists in 37 games with Buffalo last season. Selected in the seventh round of the 2004 draft, Mancari, 23, spent 2007-08 with Rochester of the American Hockey League, registering 21 tallies and 57 points in 80 contests.
New Jersey (AP) — A local Republican club in New Jersey has removed a slogan from its website that read, "Obama loves America like O.J. loved Nicole."
The Pemberton Republican Club posted the slogan that referencing ex-football star O.J. Simpson, who was acquitted in a highly publicized trial of the1994 murders of his former wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ron Goldman.
Todd Riffle, spokesman for the New Jersey Republican State Committee, said the state party is not tied to local Republican clubs.
The Pemberton Republican Club removed the slogan after Democrats alleged racist campaign tactics. Both Obama and Simpson are African-American.
The club's Web master, Ed Kuck, didn't respond to a message left at his home but told The Philadelphia Inquirer that he saw the slogan on an Internet site and copied it onto the club's Web page as a joke.
The federal government is sending most of us at least a $600 rebate.
If we spend that money at Wal-Mart, the money will go to China.
If we spend it on gasoline it will go to the Arabs.
If we purchase a computer it will go to India.
If we purchase fruit and vegetables it will go to Mexico,
Honduras, and Guatemala.
If we purchase a good car it will go to Japan.
If we purchase useless crap it will go to Taiwan ... and
none of it will help the American economy.
The only way to keep that money here at home is to buy
prostitutes, weed, beer, cigarettes, whiskey, and tattoos, since these
are the only products still produced in the USA.

Dear Mike,
Hillary Clinton was very gracious in offering her support to my campaign over the weekend. I admire her and her supporters for their hard work, courage, and tenacity. And I'm grateful for everything they've done to build our party.
But the battle ahead of us will be unlike anything we've ever faced, and it's going to demand unprecedented focus and resources.
We need to unite as Democrats, not just to defeat John McCain in the general election, but also to support Democratic candidates at every level of office in every part of the country.
Now is the time to come together and build a movement that will ensure a new kind of politics and a new kind of leadership
Join us today to learn more about the campaign and be part of history:

Democrats are more energized than ever before.
I have seen millions of new voters registering in all 50 states so they can be a part of this party at this historic moment.
I have seen people in unprecedented numbers knocking on doors, making phone calls, and talking to friends and neighbors about the kind of change we're fighting for.
This passion isn't for me or any other candidate. This passion is for change.
People of all ages and backgrounds are ready to restore the fundamental values that unite us as Democrats -- that we owe our children and our great country a better future.
The gains we made in 2006 were a huge step forward, and the leadership of Speaker Pelosi should make all Democrats proud.
In 2008, we have the opportunity to build on this progress, and I'm committed to doing everything I can to elect Democratic candidates up and down the ballot.
But I need your help to make this happen.
Join my campaign, and be a part of this movement to change America:
http://my.barackobama.com/joinus
When we work together, we won't just win the White House -- we'll remake the electoral map and create a governing majority that will transform this country.
I look forward to working with you in the months and years ahead.
Thank you,
Barack Obama
